Tears of Life

Finals week! The most stressful part of any colleges life, that unfortunately occurs 3 times per school year.
Luckily, I am a literature major and my finals consist of writing stories, analyzing poetry and American Sign Language. For one of my ASL lectures finals, I had to choose an original ASL Poem, analyze it, write about, and then record myself “performing” it.

I have grown to love this poem and its’ simplicity. For those of you who don’t sign, here is my English interpretation.

Tears of Life
A baby arrives
Happy tears stream down
She laughs and crawls
Discovering the world, she cries
She wants it, but can’t
Disappointed, she wails
“But why?”
She cries
Her heart gets broken
She sulks and wallows
She found true love
A true companion
Glassy eyes smile
She’s pregnant
With joy and awe
She watches her baby grow
And grows old herself
Tears of grief
Death comes knocking
Gone but not forgotten
Memories bring tears
